    Teen Addictions

    Presenter: Chris Tuell, Ed.D., LPCC-S, LICDC-CS, Clinical Director of Addiction Services - Lindner Center of Hope

    Teen addiction, much like for adults, is the habitual drive to continue an action even to the detriment of health and happiness. Teen who develop an addiction continue to repeat actions that are harmful to their bodies and minds, as well s a loss of happiness and satisfaction in life. Addiction often results in losing relationships, impacting school and negatively affecting their overall health of the youth. Dr. Tuell’s presentation will discuss the role of the addictive brain, and how chemical and behavioral additions, including the use of the Internet and video gaming contributes to the form of addiction. The power of the Internet will also be discussed and the trappings that technology can create for young people. Current assessment and treatment strategies will be discussed, along with case studies. Participants will gain a better understanding with the various similarities and differences among addictions and the impact upon adolescents; be enlightened of the relationship between addiction and mental health and what this means for adolescents; and gain a better understanding of addiction as a disease.
