Location: MHA, 912 Scott Street, Covington, KY 41012

Presenter: Nelson F. Rodriguez, M.D., FAPA, Medical Director, ECT Service, Lindner Center of HOPE, Assistant Clinical Professor University of Cincinnati Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience

Major depressive disorder remains to be a significant burden to patients, families and society.  About 60-70% respond adequately to treatments like pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy.  However, around 20-30% of patients with major depressive disorder do not respond and do not achieve remission. Treatment resistant depression is a real challenge particularly to clinicians. This lecture and workshop is an effort to understand the underlying mechanisms that underlie depression and factors that contribute to treatment resistance. It will also explore possible diagnostic and treatment approaches. The burden of treatment resistant depression will be discussed and participants will understand the definition of treatment resistant depression; learn the emerging concepts and hypothesis about depression; and learn about the management and treatment approaches for treatment resistant depression.
