    Obesity and Diabetes: Addiction, Eating Disorder and Mental Health

    This 3 hour course will provide information of the recent research and theoretical work into the problems of obesity and diabetes.  Emphasis will be placed on the psychosocial factors of body weight regulation, the central nervous system effects of Type-II diabetes, disordered eating and palatability / “food addiction.”   Both basic science and clinical perspectives will be discussed as well as implications for DSM updates and information relevant to mental health professionals. Participants will develop an understanding of the mental health problems specific to patients with obesity and diabetes; be able to describe current research and theory related to mental health, obesity and diabetes; and will learn about the effects of obesity and diabetes on mental health and identify possible treatment recommendations related to obesity and disordered eating.
