Location: Hamilton County Mental Health and Recovery Services Board, 2350 Auburn Ave., Cincinnati, OH 45219

Presenter: Bonnie Hedrick, Ph.D., Director of Prevention and Early Intervention Services, MHANKYSWOH

Anyone who has ever been, parented, or lived with an adolescent (ages 12-18) knows that it is a period where turmoil seems to run amok.  Researchers have explained this developmental period as a period of drastic physical and mental milestones.  The manifestation of anxiety, physical and interpersonal awkwardness, verbal outbursts, and demands for independence—even separation—are not uncommon.  Compounding the internal mental and physical changes is living in a constantly changing world, where academic, parental, and social expectations are higher.  This workshop will explore the impact of these changes upon adolescent choices that can lead to destruction for themselves, their families, and their futures. Learn to explain the developmental stages of children; identify adolescence as a period of rapid brain development; describe the physiological stress response of humans; explain unresolved stress response and its potential for impacting negative behavioral choices; and list ways social service professionals can help youth and their parents understand this period of development in order to adopt healthy ways of coping with the stress that accompanies adolescence.
