You will understand the extensive and often overlooked health risks of smoking, with a focus on these high risk populations: those with mental health and substance use disorders, low income earners, and the LGBTQ community. Learn critical information about addiction, including nicotine’s effect on the brain and nicotine withdrawal symptoms.Understand the challenges clients face in their attempts to stop smoking, with attention to ecological factors specific to high risk populations. Learn what resources are available through referrals: nicotine replacement therapy and pharmaceutical therapies. Learn to apply motivational interviewing techniques and strategy to smoking cessation and learn the components of an effective quit plan.
