    Smoking Cessation: Helping Clients Succeed

    In this course, attendees will learn about the added risks of smoking for those with behavioral and substance use disorders and will acquire tools to aid clients who have identified smoking cessation as a treatment goal. You will understand the extensive and often overlooked health risks of smoking, with a focus on these high risk populations: those with mental health and substance use disorders, low income earners, and the LGBTQ community. Learn critical information about addiction, including nicotine’s effect on the brain and nicotine withdrawal symptoms.Understand the challenges clients face in their attempts to stop smoking, with attention to ecological factors specific to high risk populations. Learn what resources are available through referrals: nicotine replacement therapy and pharmaceutical therapies. Learn to apply motivational interviewing techniques and strategy to smoking cessation and learn the components of an effective quit plan. CEU approval sources: Ohio Counselor and Social Worker CPE hours approved, #RCST111001, by the Ohio Counselor, Social Worker & Marriage and Family Therapist Board; KY Board of Social Work Continuing education sponsorship number KBSWSP2015030 (valid until 7/31/2016). Successful completion of this offering includes attending the entire offering and completion of evaluation. If you arrive late or leave early continuing education provider does not constitute endorsement of program content. Focus areas: SW Methods, Human Development & Behavior, SW practice for special populations; Counseling – Theory, Counseling Techniques, Appraisal/Assessment, Clinical Psychopathology, Personality and Abnormal Behavior, Diagnosis, Evaluation & Treatment of Mental & Emotional Disorders.
