    Assessing & Managing Suicide Risk: Core Competencies for Kentucky Mental Health Professionals

    Kentucky Legislature enacted a new law applicable to qualified mental health and healthcare professionals. The law mandates completion of a training program in suicide assessment, treatment, and management.  Individuals with KY Licenses will pay $20.00 for lunch/snacks only and your Continuing Education Credits will be free.  People seeking Ohio or a state other than Kentucky must pay $100.00  which includes lunch.

    AMSR is a one-day workshop produced by the Suicide Prevention Resource Center (SPRC) on assessing suicide risk, planning, treatment, and managing the ongoing care of the at-risk. AMSR is for mental health professionals, including social workers, licensed counselors, psychologists, psychiatrists.

    Participants will gain knowledge in the following core competencies:
    • Managing one’s own reactions to suicide
    • Reconciling the difference and potential conflict between a clinician’s goal to prevent suicide and a client’s goal to eliminate psychological pain through suicide
    • Maintaining a collaborative, non-adversarial stance
    • Eliciting suicide ideation, behavior, and plans
    • Making a clinical judgment of the risk that a client will attempt or complete suicide
    • Collaboratively developing an emergency plan
    • Developing a written treatment and services plan that addresses a client’s immediate, acute, and continuing suicide ideation and risk for suicide
    • Developing policies and procedures for following clients closely
    • Implementing the principles of crisis

    Workshop Components
    Assessing and Managing Suicide Risk includes:
    • 6 1/2 hours of training, in a mix of lecture, paired practice, written exercises, and video modeling
    • An engaging and stimulating participant manual, including bibliographies for each of the five major section
    • Post-workshop access to additional resources on a web page exclusively for AMSR participants and trainers
    • Ample time for discussion

    Continuing Education Credits
    The Suicide Prevention Research Center (SPRC) is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists.  SPRC retains responsibility for this program and its content. This program is approved for 6.5 CE credits through APA.  6.5 continuing education credits are available from NASW, NBCC, APA and Continuing Medical Education Credits (CME). This program is approved for 6.5 clock hours. CE credits are pending from the Kentucky Board of Marriage and Family Therapists and Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselors.  Partial credit will not be given for partial attendance.

    Registration is limited to 48 people and pre-registration is required.
